The principal objective of this research is the characterization and monitoring of the production systems practiced by small farmers in the Machadinho d'Oeste (Rondônia) region.
The fulfillment of this objective involves two goals: the annual monitoring of land use - via satellite images - and the circumstantial characterization, every three years, of those production systems practiced using close to 250 variables.
The temporal perspective for the project is 100 years. After more than 10 years of accompaniment, it is becoming possible to analyze consistencies regarding agronomic, socio-economic, and environmental sustainability of the existing production systems.
Lastly, the final goal of maintenance and actualization of a data base, geocodified and informatized, with the information obtained by the project, has allowed a consolidation of the profile of evolution of agricultural colonization in tropical humid forests. The triennial profiles have provided a base for research and planning for multiple purposes.
