By following a sample of rural properties in Machadinho d'Oeste during the past 10 years by Embrapa NMA and ECOFORÇA, a great amount of cartographic and numerical information has been collected. This information aids in the understanding of the process of agricultural development and its problems and potentials in this portion of the Amazônia.

The digital cartographic base constructed using geographic information systems (GIS) reunites various basic planes of information, such as the agrarian structure and soil fertility, both on the 1:100,000 scale.
Of the original 3,000 polygons, relative to the rural properties of the land division of INCRA, 250 variables were selected and evaluated every three years. The reclassification of the original polygons via GIS was made possible through the data collected in the years 1986, 1989, 1993 & 1996, allowing for the generation of 118 thematic maps for each period. Map descriptors include indicators for: socio-economic (agrarian condition, health , manual labor, installations, equipment, etc.); agronomic (area planted, annual and perrenial crops, production, productivity, etc.); economic (commercialization, product price, storage, etc.); and environmental (burns, crop rotations, soil conservation, etc.) variables.
The existence of a very large number of actual maps ratifies the potential of geoprocessing as a bracket tool for the analyses of the sustentability of the shown production systems.
Four large databases were constructed, containing the results for each field survey:
These results can be obtained, in digital form, by contacting Embrapa NMA and asking for the "Sistema Geocodificado de Informações Ecológico-Econômicas para o Monitoramento Cartografado da Agricultura".
